While the October unemployment rate in Pennsylvania remained flat at 8.8% from September, the state managed to add over 10,000 jobs month to month. This is only the second time since 2007 that Pennsylvania has seen job counts rise.

The big gainers were Healthcare/Education and Hospitality, while manufacturing and construction continue to shed the most jobs, though at a reduced level from prior months.

This puts Pennsylvania 1.4% better than the national unemployment rate of 10.2%.

Job fairs are still one of the easiest ways to get in front of a potential employer. The entire point of the event is to being together employers with open positions and job seekers to fill them. If you prepare adequately and come with an open mind about job possibilities, you may very likely leave the event with an interview, a job offer or some great leads. The Employment Guide was fortunate enough to help over 15,000 people find employment through job fairs alone in 2009.

We have a complete resource center on Orlando Job Fairs here.

Whether you just got out of the service or are staring to think about your next steps after military life, online job hunting is the most efficient way to find your new career. There are many new search tools and online job resources available, waiting for the classifieds in the Sunday paper is old news. Perhaps you have already dabbled in online job searches and social networking. However there are still some tips and tricks to getting the most of your online job seeking efforts.

Here are some tips and resources to get you started:

Start With The Basics
Set up a professional email with GMail or your own hosted domain. Try and grab yourname@gmail.com if its available.

Look in All Available Places
In today's landscape there are job boards, social networks and communities for every industry, every niche and every brand. Find these specialized job boards and communities and look for people to connect with, companies that you relate to and opportuities to explore. The Employment Guide has set up niche sites in Transportation, Healthcare and Older workers to make this process easier for job seekers.

Use Automation Tools
Set up things like job alerts and Google alerts to create feeds that bring the jobs to you. This will make the most effective use of your time.

Promote Yourself
Use these social media tools to promote yourself in a positive light. Do you have videos of presentations or pictures of things you have built, awards you have won? If so, showcase this on your profiles, start a blog or bring them onto the networks. This will give recruiters a great sense of who you are and what you can do for their company.

Get Offline
We can get caught up in the ease of tools like Google and Job Baords, however physical meetings and networking events can still play a major role in returning to a civilian job. Try sites like Meetup, Eventful and Upcoming to find events in your area that relate to your likes and interests.

For more information about transforming from the soldier's life to civilian employment, please be sure to pick up a copy of the Veteran's Transition Guide at your local Workforce Central Florida location or at a military base near you.

Last year we shared an overview of the all new HealthCareerWeb.com and all the new features of this health care professional network. Today, we have a quick video that shows you all the different ways that you can look for a job on the site, after all, the goal of your networking is to expand and develop your career, right?

All you nurses, physical therapists and health care professionals now have a very powerful tool to find jobs in your area and in your niche.

Some tips to finding great health care jobs in Orlando on Health Career Web:

Keywords: Use the best possible keywords for the position you desire. If you type in nursing, you will see positions for all types of nurses, in all situations, skill levels and experience. If you type in LPN or Registered Nurse, you will find more specific results that fit your skill level and job of choice.

Broaden your search: If you know your areas, you can begin picking cities, zip codes and locations that match your preferences. Knowing that Sanford is just around the corner from Lake Mary will open up jobs in both locations. Don't be scared to open a map and see the place you want to work, especially if you are looking to relocate.

Know your skill level: If you are currently in school, are there things you can be doing to help you get the certifications or experience you need? If you are out of school, can you be doing things to brush up on your skills? Look for similarities in job descriptions and see the things you are going to need in order to land that healthcare job.

Happy hunting Orlando and please let me know what you think about the new Health Career Web in the comments.

Just this last Friday, the Labor Department said that the jobless rate in the U.S. had jumped up to 10.2%. That is the highest unemployment rate in 26 years! The highest post world war II rate was 10.8% at the height of the 1982 recession. Also, economists that were recently surveyed stated that the unemployment rate will hit 10.5% by the middle of next year. The Federal Reserve also warned that unemployment will likely stay high for the next couple of years.

That news may trouble some people, but others may choose to believe that the job market is looking brighter. With many reports that the economy is on the way up, it is nice to hear that companies are going to start hiring. The National Association for Business Economics said the number of employers planning to hire workers over the next six months exceeded the number expecting job cuts for the first time since the recession began in December 2007. That is really great news and is something that everyone should focus on instead on the double digit unemployment. We here at The Employment Guide are also doing all that we can to help get the economy back on a roll again.

It is also nice to see that employers may need to soften their stance on sick days with there being such a scare with H1N1. With uncertain times, people do not need the added stress that they could possibly loose their job by being sick.

So Portland, with the recent news of the unemployment rate being double digits and that companies are going to hire. What side of the fence do you lean towards? Please leave you comments in the section below.

Van Pool - Carpool to Work in Orlando
I found an interesting resource this morning that I wanted to share with you guys. It's a site called Van-Pools and features ways to, you guessed it, van pool to work. From their site:

Van-Pools.com is a blog and online resource portal for commuters who want to learn more about the financial and environmental benefits of sharing rides. Van-Pools.com provides a forum for vanpoolers and other ride-sharers to access commute-related information, national trends and expert insights, share stories and gain access to unique and useful commute-related tools.

With time and money being your two strongest assets, you can save both by teaming up and riding with friends and co-workers. We have some people in our office doing this and it saves miles on the car, money in gas and allows them to switch off from driving - which gets them refreshed for the day.

Do any of you car pool to work? Let's share some stories in the comments.

What's Your E-mail Address?
by: New York Employment Guide
03. November 2009 | Show Originial

Setting up a new internet account, creating a user name or picking out your new email address can be a lot of fun. We debate on silly names like sunflower10, baseballboy or maybe even adhesivemonkies. We like to pick out something that says something about ourselves. It's a nice idea but when it comes to important letters even resumes it can be a big NO NO!

Your resume reflects everything about you. The recruiter sees you have a good job history and education. You are everything the recruiter has been looking for. They look at your contact information and there's your email or user name purplehaze93 or partygirl2000. They are turned off within seconds. These names can give recruiters the wrong impression or the right one. "Is this person a drug user?" or maybe "Does this person have a drinking problem or problems showing up late for work?"

Here are a few ways to avoid this situation.

1. If you already have an email with an unacceptable name, create a new one with a free email service like Gmail or Hotmail. This is also a good way to keep track of all your outgoing and incoming emails just for job searching.

2. When you create the email or user name use your name like bobsmith@blahblah.com.

3. If you don't want to use your full name you can use your first or last initial. bsmith@blahblah.com or bobs@blahblah.com.

4. If you don't want to use your name at all try to use something relating to your job search like jobseeker101@blahblah.com.

The point is using these types of user names or email addresses is the safer way to go. You don't want them to question if you are a vampire or if you dance with wild animals with names like truebloodlover or reggaemountaingoat.

- Times can be rough right now for some people and companies with bankruptcy. If you think that you or your company may have it bad with debt, take a look at this article and how people are punished for bankruptcy abroad:

Dubai: Yes, you can go to jail

In Dubai, if you don't have enough cash in your account to cover the check in any given month, watch out: The bank can get a warrant for your arrest, and you can be jailed, Rhode said. Those in default also can have their passports seized, preventing them from leaving the country.

Germany: Bankruptcy is a teachable moment

In Germany, as in most European countries, creditors could turn to specialized public debt collectors to try to get defaulters to pay. These collectors might hold public auctions of one of the debtor's few possessions -- a sofa, say -- which often brought in so little money that the auction costs weren't even covered, let alone any part of the debt, Kilborn said.

...Germany, however, views its six-year repayment plan as a chance to educate consumers about responsible money management, Kilborn said. If the debtor follows the rules of the plan, his or her debts are wiped out after six years even if not a single payment is made to a creditor -- and typically, none is.

India: Bands of thugs and public shaming

There is no system, formal or informal, for helping people resolve their consumer debts in India, Kilborn said.

A growing middle class and a rise in the availability of credit haven't led to any kind of mediation system for people who can't pay. Instead, even legitimate lenders may turn to bands of thugs to enforce debts or use public humiliation, such as demonstrations outside the defaulters' homes.

- Have you ever wondered how the US compares with other countries in retirement? Well the Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index has ranked countries based on the adequacy, sustainability, and integrity of their public and private pension systems. It turns out that we are ranked 6th out of the 11 countries examined.

- Here is an article on the 5 stocks that you should buy as prices drop. It has great tips on long term investment that have great potential on being successful.

So in closing Portland, what are your thoughts on debt, retirement, and the stock market? And do these articles change your opinions on these subjects? Please leave your comments in the section below.

Healthcare recruiters and job seekers can now more easily interact with blogs, groups, forums, photos and videos

NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 2, 2009 – HealthCareerWeb.com, a full service healthcare job site and a division of Dominion Enterprises, has been redesigned to seamlessly integrate its online job board with its medical professional network.

“We’ve redesigned HealthCareerWeb.com with the user in mind. Healthcare recruiters and job seekers can now more easily engage with one another through our professional networking environment. And the best part is—it’s all free!” said Denise Tanner, business development manager of HealthCareerWeb.com.

The redesigned site
encourages visitors to create a user profile. Similar to other professional networking sites, once a user profile is created, the visitor can then add friends, create or join groups, post blogs, participate in forum discussions and post photos and videos. HealthCareerWeb.com’s forums offer an informal place where medical professionals can post questions and articles about careers in healthcare and work-related issues.

The new HealthCareerWeb.com also allows job seekers to apply for positions directly from their
profile and to save jobs in one central location. The next time the user logins in, he or she can view uncompleted job applications. This new streamlined application process makes applying for a medical job even easier.

For healthcare companies, HealthCareerWeb.com provides the perfect setting to showcase the organization’s offerings. Free of charge, healthcare organizations may create their own
user profiles to post videos and other useful information to the healthcare Web site. Companies may also apply to become a Certified Healthcare Recruiter which allows the organization to post a special emblem to its profile page.

The new HealthCareerWeb.com will be showcased at the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration (ASHHRA) 45th Annual Conference and Exposition, Nov. 1 – 3, in Chicago. Show attendees should visit Booth #129 for a live demonstration of the professional networking healthcare Web site and to register to win a Wii Fit.

“The ASHHRA conference is a great opportunity for HealthCareerWeb.com to unveil our new features and products. The 2008 event in Austin was pivotal in our conceptual redesign and we are now prepared to unveil the new site to our customers and to the industry,” said Chris Baker, director of business development.
