You know the song they always sing at New Years--Auld Lang Syne? Yeah, I never knew what the heck it meant either. So I did what anyone with an internet connection would do: I googled it. And of course there was a Wikipedia entry. The song is actually a Scottish poem that was turned into a song. Basically it's a song that pays tribute to the good old days and is hopeful for the future. (You can find the full history and lyrics here.)

The song is pretty fitting, I'd say since the new year is a time for resolutions, reflection and preparation for the year ahead. As we move forward in to the New Year, it's hard not to look back with amazement of what the last year has brought us. Houston weathered Hurricane Ike and just recently snow, no pun intended... And other cities that we cover have also experienced great highs and lows.

However you you choose to reflect on 2008 and prepare for 2009; whether you watch a big pot of Gumbo drop like those in New Orleans (which was voted in the top 10 quirkiest new years celebrations by TripAdvisor and among the world's best by BudgetTravel) or cook a great traditional Southern New Year's meal, it's good to take time to assess your life, your goals and even your career. You can find ways to acheive at least your career goals here and at any of our other city blogs throughout the coming year.

What are you thankful for?
What are your resolutions?
What are you hoping for in 2009?

Happy New Year from EmploymentGuide.com!
